Maršálek was a typographer and political activist who survived Mauthausen in the war and then later headed up the memorial and museum when it was founded in 1970.

The prize will be awarded for scientific studies and initiatives that have made outstanding achievements in the fields of memorial, memory, and consciousness. As well as the themes of Nazism and racism, completed projects that have looked more generally at strengthening of democracy will also be considered.

Projects must be completed and the museum is particularly interested in those with an international context, and welcome entries from projects based abroad. Projects can be submitted until October 31.

As well as helping to found the museum, Czech-born Austrian Maršálek, who passed away in 2011, wrote one of the most comprehensive histories of the concentration camp in 1974.
